NOT LAME CATALOG WINTER 1995-96 (PDF 16 Pages)

Well, I guess you all know Bruce Brodeen and Not Lame will be soon part of the power pop legend. It's always a sad thing to read that a great label or a record store are closing their doors but i will always remember that day of december 1995 when i received the NL catalog (it was the second Not Lame catalog published). Very soon after, i ordered a lot of stuff from Not Lame and Bruce also sent me some unofficial tapes for free (Phil Seymour, Shoes, Adam Schmitt and much more).
The truth is Bruce Brodeen and Not Lame revived the powerpop spark inside of me and it means that without this catalog, PPC and angelo would have never existed.
So, please download the Not Lame catalog in PDF format (16 pages) and remember the days of paper catalogs.

STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING Vol1 Number 5 (April-May 1989)

British magazine "Strange Things Are Happening" was launched in March 1988 and had only 7 issues until Spring 1990. Related to Bam Caruso, the Magazine has now become one of the greatest fanzines of all time, "Strange Things" was different from the run-of-the-mill zines. Although rooted in the great music of the '60s and early '70s, the editors and writers found room to cover everything from Krazy Kat comics to the Barbarella movie. Excellent, entertaining writing from Brian Hogg and colleagues, and a timelessly cool layout. The complete set of issues is now fetching high prices on auction websites. "Strange Things" also released the rare collection of 60's obscurities "Circus Days".

Here's Volume 1, Number 5 (50 pages) scanned in 400dpi and printed in PDF, the bookmarks have been added for direct access to the articles featured.

VARIOUS - CIRCUS DAYS Vols 1 & 2 (1991)

Published by the cult fanzine "Strange Things are Happening", the collection "Circus Days" featured 6 volumes, and all of them are now really hard to find items. The compilations made by Phil Smee (famous collaborator/designer with the Edsel, Demon & Bam Caruso labels) unearthed lost and undiscovered gems (pop-sike and psychedelic obscurities) from the past.

Special note: As you may have noticed, i've never posted 60's related stuff just because there are plenty of blogs doing this better than i could ever doing it. Anyway i know from where the Powerpop genre is coming and i have these first two cd's (actually it means 3 volumes), so i figured out it would be nice to share them with you in FLAC and mp3 (320) with full artwork scanned. And as someone said it before "This is Pop!".

EARTH EIGHTEEN - BUTTERFLY (1995)

Sounding for all the world like glammed-out rock & rollers enmeshed in a battle of wills with the flannelled, goateed alt-rock brigade, the songs on "Butterfly" roil and seethe, sublimated only by early era giveaway drumbeats and vocalist John Dupree's occasional penchant for channeling the spirit of T. Rex's Marc Bolan. From the wonderful opener "La La Song," which harkens back to a platform-booted era, to the light jibes at heavy metal meatheads on the heavy, hair-shaking "Mechanimal," and on to the absolutely marvelous downer, "The Fall Divine," this band proves proficient across a sonic jigsaw puzzle. Enjoyable and interesting across the board, it's a shame Earth 18 were relegated to little more than a flash in the pan. It's possible that they may have revealed themselves to be a one-album kind of a band, but it's also plausible that, with a little time and leeway, they might have developed into something very special indeed. Songs
La La Song / Dolores Haze / Mechanimal / The Fall Divine / Goin' Steady / Dahlia / Maximum Teenage Overdrive / Girl Of The Downward Smile / Long Gone / Blood Revival 99 / 95

BEAT ANGELS - RED BADGE OF DISCOURAGE (1997)

One year after their smashing debut "Unhappy Hour With...", the Beat Angels were back with a strong second effort proving that glam never died, it just migrated in Arizona. It was great to see that someone understands the basic principle of power pop/glam : "loud & fun". The Beat Angels were both with great song titles, great lyrics filled with references to Strummer and Jones and Bebe Buell and the day before the morning after, all kicked into high gear by the in-your-face guitars of mainstays Michael Brooks and Keith Jackson. The album was again produced by Candy's Gilby Clarke and had an excellent film noir style artwork. Two great albums in two years, and no ballads!
In 2001, The Beat Angels recorded a 3rd album that was never released but it was given to the SOTD blog by Michael Brooks, so you can grab it over there at SOTD, courtesy of the band.

Songs
Snot / You're A Wreck / My Glum Sugar-Plum / Glitter Girl / Saturday Punks / Go Your Way / Keep It Up / Crashing Back To Her / Hey Little Peep-Show / Cinnamon Says / Celebrate Summer

PYRAMIDIACS - TEETER TOTTER (1st edition) (1996)

Originally released in Spain in 1996 to co-incide with the band's six week tour. By the end of that six week tour the original pressing had sold out and the album became a collectors powerpop nugget. It was remastered and reissued in Australia six years later with a brand new artwork. The driving, propulsive rhythms and crystalline production make their gritty-ish, but clean take on the POWER in POP one of the best examples of the genre around. Featuring Michael Carpenter (who also produces) and Mickster (The Finkers), The Pyramidiacs released the highly recommended "Stuff 'n' Junk" a double cd retrospective in 2005, still available.

Songs
Call You 'Round / The Cleaner / Waiting / There's Always Something / Take A Bow / It's Not You / Out Of Your Heart / Don't Keep It From Me / I'm Not Sorry / Fickle / Jim / Just A Chance
