THE ACT - TOO LATE AT 20 (1981)

Prior to Dream Academy, Nick Laird-Clowes led the more down-to-earth Act. On the band's lone album, impeccable production gives his controlled passion and the band's tight, tasteful playing a clearly deserved chance to be heard. Elvis Costello and Tom Petty appear to be the Act's major influences (there are also nods to the Byrds and Springsteen) but the quartet rises above derivation, giving such songs as "Touch and Go" and "The Long Island Sound" indelible emotional authenticity. (Trouser Press)

Songs
Too Late At 20 / The Long Island Soul / Touch And Go / The Art Of Deception / Protection / Sure Fire / Skip The Beat / Zero Unidentified / OK Jerko / Get It While You're Toung

Great post!
I've got the album on vinyl myself. Best track in my humble opinion: Get It While You're Toung

Of note to Pink Floyd fans, the lead guitarist of The Act was Mark Gilmour, the brother of David Gilmour. I believe that he is the guy in the lower left of the album cover, below the fellow with the hat.

This is probably the connection which led to David Gilmour producing the first (as well as the third) Dream Academy album.

Mark Gilmour was in another group after The Act called Scarlet Party (from 1982-85).

Another Floydish connection was producer Joe Boyd, who in addition to producing Nick Drake (big Dream Academy influence), Fairport Convention, etc. was also co-founder of the UFO Club in London in the late 60s, a venue the early Floyd played in often. He also produced Floyd's "Arnold Layne" single.

As an aside, Dennis Dragon mixed the track "Sure Fire." In addition to being the brother of Daryl Dragon (Captain of Captain and Tenille), Dennis was the drummer for the notorious beach punk band the Surf Punks (some of you might remember their infamous performance in very awesome film URGH! A Music War).

Thanks for posting this - I've long been curious about this album, but have never managed to track it down.

"Too Late at 20" is a terrific album, showing Nick in full power-pop form. I've recently posted Nick's first album with his band Alfalpha from 1977. Check it out if you want to listen to Nick's CSN-styled first recordings.

Hi there,

What a fantastic website. A great selection. Would it be to much trouble to re-up The Act's album?

Many thanks,
Nick

Any chance of a re-up, s'il vous-plait?

Unfortunately i lost my copy of this album when my HD crashed. I would really like to replace it. Is there any chance of a re-up? (The same applies to the Alfalpha album from 1977.)
Thanks for your consideration,
Oz

Any chance I could find this in 2019? Act and Alfalfa? It would be greatly appreciated by a true fan and music lover.
