Great first entry. I really like the track "Hdi". it is almost Emo'ish, in the vein of Sunny Day Real Estate with a deep dose of folk.

Many thanks for this... though I must be 'clueless' because I don't get what the clues are for, when you don't need them to open the downloads. Do they lead to info pn the albums somewhere? Or is that the mystery?

Anonymous said...

Thanks. Do the numbers refer to the Top 200 Powerpop album list? I missed the first one and have a bit of time before the next one runs out. Thanks to all others I've found here too. Much appreciated

great stuff. a real find.

Pat Walters said...

Yes, the numbers come from John M. Borack's Top 200 Power Pop Albums in his book "Shake Some Action". If you're taking requests I'd love to see #8!

Anonymous said...

Can we make requests? ;-)

How about:

#177
#183
#185
#175
#44
#56
#79

Whatever you come up with, is highly appreciated. Great blog!

Anonymous said...

I loved this last year, so this is a special treat.

I'd like to request #81 and #89 please.

Anonymous said...

Loving this.

Clues give you a hint what it is before you download it. For those of us with limited time for downloading, this is useful.

So far they have been tied to the Top 200 Power Pop LP's.

Thanks, especially for Brad Jones. Been looking for it for a long time.

Two for two that I didn't already have! Thanks for the fun!

I worked it out. I hope I don't get in trouble for giving a clue but the numbers are in the blog. A bit of lateral thinking and you should work it out.

Used to buy CDs from Brad when he was working at a record store. Interested in hearing that upload. Thanks. (and kind of freaky I'm listening to Tommy Keene right now)

Thank you for The Roswells...highly appreciated...great music, great blog...visiting you every day!

I couldn't find Brad Jones on the Top 200 Power Pop albums so it doesn't go by that list folks. The list is in this blog :) Sorry I'm not just telling you straight away, but its a good brain teaser. Some of the albums from the 200 Power Pop list can be found here.... eg The Greys, Cherry Twister, Ike yadda, yadda. I'm going to try and find the actual CD's too eventually

http://digivinyltal.blogspot.com/

Once again I'd like to thank angelo for introducing me to some great music. So far The Sorrows sound really good and 20/20 I think might be a sleeper for me ie more I listen, more I like.

angelo said...

sorry but B.J sure is ranked well #75 - check if you please

and the Grays were never part of the list

Encore un somptueux cadeau de Noel !

Shoot, I missed the Dec. 3 offering by waiting till 11 p.m. (Pacific Time Zone) to download it. When I finally tried, the Dec. 4 item was already posted. Is there any way I can still get the Dec. 3 album?

Anonymous said...

Kinda sux that you close the link after each day, and don't ID anything either. On the other hand it's a cool gimmick.

Anonymous said...

I'm confused now, on the list I got #75 is Shame Idols and the Grays are #35. Its the list that people voted for, not the one here. I originally thought the numbers were based on the voted list. I also think the voted list is a bit subjective but it's a great place for me to discover new bands. My curiosity has been aroused to see which bands made both lists.
Happy motoring.

While the boss wasn't looking, I compared the 200 Power list here with one from another site where people voted for their favourites.

This is what I found...

Common to both lists

The Beat - The Beat

Big Star - Radio City
Cheap Trick - In Color
Cherry Twister - At Home With Cherry Twister
Chris Von Sneidern - Big White Lies
Cotton Mather - Kontiki

Flying Color - Flying Color
Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
Greenberry Woods - Rapple Dapple
Jellyfish - Spilt Milk
The Keys - The Keys
The Knack - Get the Knack
Marshall Crenshaw - Marshall Crenshaw
Material Issue - Freak City Soundtrack
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
Merrymakers - Bubblegun
Myracle Brah - Life On Planet Eartsnop
The Numbers - Add Up
Orange Humble Band - Assorted Creams
Owsley - Owsley
P. Hux - Deluxe
Pezband - Pezband

Posies - Dear 23
The Raspberries - Starting Over
Receiver - Inspiration Overload
The Records - Crashes

The Shoes - Tongue Twister
Smithereens - Especially For You
Spongetones - Beat and Torn

Common bands to both lists but different albums
Badfinger
Bill Lloyd
The dB’s

Game Theory
Gigilo Aunts
The Heats
The Hudson Brothers
Jason Falkner
Liquor Giants
The Lolas
Loud Family
Nick Lowe
The Rubinoos
The Shazam
The Three O’Clock
XTC
The Yums Yums

In conclussion,
1) I don't want to find another list and if I do, I won't read it
2) There's over 350 albums I have to check out.
3) Why debate politics when you can debate pros and cons of powerpop artists

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Motoring

well, i have to say the right #188 is the one posted today december 10th and not "Red Letter Day - Beef Candy" (2001)which is a folk/pop girls band

Actually there are at least 3 or 4 different "Red Letter Day" bands.

The "powerpop" one featured as #188 is from San Francisco and the musicians are Gino Nave, John Reinert and Ernie Taira

John Reinert and Gino Nave can be heard on the Jarret Cooper album available from cdbaby

Angelo...I stand corrected. Actually, I think we had this discussion earlier since there are several bands with this name. I deleted my previous comment so hopefully nobody else gets as confused as I am. Thanks again and Happy Holidays to you!

Angelo, Thank you for December 10! In my searches that appears to be one the 5 most difficult to locate from the list.

For today (12/12) -- does this mean that CD2 will be showing up tomorrow (12/13)?

I looked for a link in what was downloaded for CD1 and there wasn't an additional URL for CD2, so I thought I'd ask...

Thanks for this great blog and all the awesome music.

Angelo, once again you out-do yourself!! Wonderful daily present under our christmas trees! I haven't even listened to many yet, but I saw that you offered one of my favorite discs, OHB's Assorted Creams, and I know that any that heard it will be amazed at the music.

I also wanted to mention that we just saw the reunion club show for The Sighs (after 12 years!) and it was magic. Shitty sound (gee thanks Pearl Street) but all the songs were spot on & the crowd loved it. The guys in the band were so thrilled that the place was packed - Great music rules the world! Thanks agian for featuring their two discs....

Taking any requests?

#176?, #175? #183, #146

This has been great again!

Angelo,

Great job so far on the Advent again this year! Here's the numbers from Borack's list that I've never seen posted on any of the power pop sites that I frequent:

50, 61, 99, 101, 103, 105, 109, 112, 119, 120, 122, 125, 127, 128, 129, 130, 135, 157, 159, 164, 165, 166, 173, 175, 177, 182, 183, 187, 192, 195, 197

Hopefully you're already planning on posting some of these over the upcoming week, but if you or any of your readers know where any of these can be found, I would be very happy indeed.

Happy Holidays to all!

Hi,

I just stumbled over your blog after googling for "Zones" album "Under Influence", which I found here. Thanks! Browsing your blog archives, I found gems like The Pop, Reggie Knighton et al. Even my "Stride & Plain - New Guitar in Town", which I haven't played on my reliable Thorens for a few years was there...
I then searched for another old favourite which I recently found on CD, namely "Starjets". I believe their classic "God Bless the Starjets" deserves to be added to your impressive encyclopedia of Power Pop. Wouldn't you agree?

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Best Regards, and have an excellent christmas!

There is another Top 200 at http://www.midwestusergroup.org/PP_Top200.htm

I've only compiled the first 100 from that list, but expect it will bring the total list to over 450 albums to be investigated.

Only three albums made the top ten on all three lists - Big Star (#1 Record), 20/20 (20/20) and The Beat.

The top ten from each list comprises twenty-five separate albums (some lists had two-fers). Only two other albums ('Starting Over','Radio City') made the top 25 on all three lists. Obviously, determining the best power pop depends on who you ask.

Of those twenty-five, there were eleven each from the '70s and '90s. Of the three '80s albums, two were on two-fers with '70s albums. If you came of age in the 1980s, it sucks to be you.

I am awed by the greatness of Angelo for bringing us these fine selections and hope that power-pop becomes the dominant music in 2009. We'll all want to be singing a happy tune as we descend into global meltdown.

Hi, I'm Jarret Cooper (as mentioned by Angelo above). Gino Nave and John Reinert of Red Letter Day (San Francisco, mid-90's) can be heard not only on my album but on Gino's "Achievements In Sound" CDs -- www.achievementsinsound.com.
