Tributes Vol. 14

TRIBUTES OR NOT TRIBUTES VOL. 14 (2020)
There are several ways of covering a classic tune, artists can be faithful to the original, they can slow it down, they can speed it up, well they can do what they wish as long the covers will be enjoyable. Of course, some people just don't like covers, but you have to remember that The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Ramones, Nick Lowe and quite of lot of famous bands made some great covers.

The first "Tributes or not Tributes" was released in 2006, Over the years, the collections were regularly posted on PPC. More than 600 covers have been shared on PPC. With this 14th volume of "Tributes or Not Tributes" (there's no vol. 13 beacuse volume 9 counts as two volumes). It is time to enjoy the roots of the music we love... and just like Johnny Ramone used to say:

"Go back and learn the history. Go back to the beginning of rock 'n'roll and listen to everything that went down".

Once again, it is available in lossy and lossless formats with the usual set of custom artwork, (even though, i know only a few will ever print the artwork), including full details of the bands involved. All the covers included here were lifted from lossless CD's, LP's, singles or digital downloads (even though a few ones seem to have been lossy mastered - audiochecker file added)

BACK TO THE TRIBUTES
"Tributes or not Tributes Vol 9 (1974-1984)"
It was 40 years ago, two years before i was able to listen to "Blitkrieg Bop"  while walking in a record store on a Saturday afternoon. The next few years would become the best ones with Bomp!, the first Stiff singles and all that stuff i've shared with you on PPC since 2007.

This is the reason why i've made a new volume of "Tributes or not Tributes" spanning ten years between 1974 and 1984. 

This is a great opportunity to remember what Johnny Ramone once said,
"Go back and learn the history. Go back to the beginning of rock 'n'roll and listen to everything that went down".

Trust me all the bands featured knew a lot about history.
The collection is available in both formats (lossy and lossless)
with the usual set of artwork (booklet + inner + inlay + tray)

This is Volume 6 of the ever popular collection of covers. As this one is free, i won't say it is number 6 of the "Tributes or not Tributes" series. So, almost a year after the successful Volume V, this new compilation brings 51 artists covering some of the best power pop acts we all love. There's even a cover song by the artist who originally wrote it in the 70's and finally released his own version in the 90's.

In 2006, i made my first "Tributes or not Tributes" compilation and until august 2008 two other collections were added. So, after an overlong 15-month hiatus, "Tributes or not Tributes" strikes back with plenty of great covers performed by some of the best power pop acts we all dig.

TRIBUTES OR NOT TRIBUTES (2006)











You all know "you can't judge a book by its cover", but you also know "you can judge a band by the covers". Sometimes, a band can ruin a great song, but sometimes another band can match or even surpass the original, such as "I Fought The Law" (The Clash), "Stop Your Sobbing" (Pretenders) or an artist can get a hit with his cover while the original version had flopped (see "Without You" of Badfinger and Harry Nilsson fame).
So, that's the reason why, the PPC blog is proud to bring to you (again) 2x50 masterpieces covered by 2x50 bands or artists. Some of them, specially the "Do Ya" version, are great covers and add something to the original, some others...well you'll judge the covers by yourself.. if you like 'em, buy 'em....

Special note : As you'll read the sleeve notes, in 2006 i made these two 2cd compilations for the blog i used to contribute for. The ones who already grabbed them at the time will remember the "Rewind" inlay had not the patchwork sleeves, so a mere 18 months later, i finally completed the work at last. And remember, these compilations are almost 100% Stones free........i wouldn't say the same about Jeff Lynne....

TRIBUTES OR NOT TRIBUTES - V (2010)



















So, V is the 5th volume of "Tributes or not Tributes", the first two volumes were posted in 2006, followed in 2008 by the aptly titled (at the time) "500.000 Blog Fans Can't Be Wrong" and in 2009 by "Tributes or not Tributes Strikes Back". Summer 2010 is the right moment to give another "49 Great Covers" of some famous songs we all care about. I'd like to thank all the bands involved in this project even though some will find out they are featured here. Special thanks to Buddy Love, the Slingsby Hornets, Kurt Baker (who has just released his CD of covers "Got It Covered") and others who read the PPC blog from time to time.

Special bonus: Yesterday, I received a cover of the classic "Knowing Me, Knowing You" by Jeff Shelton & The Well Wishers, but the compilation was already ready to be posted. So you can grab it here, and make it so the 50th cover of the collection. You also can watch a video of the cover on YouTube.
