THE TOURISTS
THE TOURISTS (1979) - LUMINOUS BASEMENT (1980)

Although The Tourists' main songwriter was Peet Coombes, they are now better known for two of their members (A.L & D.S) who went on to achieve great success as a synth pop duo.
Prior to 1977 Pete Coombes and the duo were called The Catch (one single on Logo Records) and then, they recruited bass guitarist Eddie Chin and drummer Jim Toomey, and rechristened themselves The Tourists. This saw the beginning of a productive two years for the band and they recorded three albums: "The Tourists", "Reality Effect", and "Luminous Basement" and released plenty of singles.
The band toured extensively in the UK and abroad, but despite modest chart success, they were critically savaged by the punk-championing UK music press. This, combined with legal wranglings and some personal tensions, led to the group disbanding in 1980. Peet Combes died in 1997.

The Tourists (1979)
Blind Among The Flowers / Save Me / Fools Paradise / Can't Stop Laughing / Don't Get Left Behind / Another English Day / Deadly Kiss / Ain't No Room / The Loneliest Man In The World / Useless Duration Of Time / He Who Laughs Last Laughs Longest / Just Like You

The Tourists (266 mb)

Luminous Basement (1980)
Walls And Foundations / Don't Say I told You So / Week Days / So You Want To Go Away Now / One Step Nearer The Edge / Angels And Demons / Talk To Me / Round Round Blues / Let's Talk A Walk / Time Drags So Slow / I'm Going To Change My Mind

Luminous (333 mb)

I can't thank you enough for posting this! I bought their 1st LP cut-out for a $1 US. Sadly, in a moment of weakness, I traded it for a Comateens LP and single (which I also miss now). I still have the US re-issue (2 copies) of "Reality Effect) and the Limited edition of the UK LP "Luminous Basement" plus the "I Only Want To Be With You" b/w "Summers Night" single. I can't play records these days so I only have the best of and "Reality Effect" on CD. I was really into them during the happiest times of my life - this should bring back great memories. Again, thanks so much!

The irony is the absolute best Pete Coombes song "Golden lamp" is ONLY on their very 1st release - the Blind Among The Flowers - and then only on the double 7" EP version.

Get it here: http://www.divshare.com/download/10829920-d25

Pete Coombes rulez! Too bad as far as I know he's never released any music since the Tourists.

Great to finally find a digital version of this. Yes, unfortunately Peet never released any music after he split the band in 1980 but he did make some incredible music - very psychedelic but still in his inimitable power pop tuneful way. Sadly, Peet died in 1997. I was the band's fan club manager for a couple of years until they split and Peet became my best friend. Hopefully one day his sons, who are both hip hop/rap musicians will see fit to release some of the incredible music he left behind. Some of it is very much in the Arthur Lee/Syd Barrett vein. Has anyone heard Borderline by The Catch? I have all three Tourists albums on vinyl, LMITW on picture disc, picture sleeves for all the singles, etc, etc. I still have my tour programme from seeing them in 1980. However, the nearest I have got to owning Borderline is having a copy I ordered lost in the post. I've never even heard it!

I´m fascinated of The Tourists music. Great to see young musicians with full energy and great sound.

Peet Coombes was, in my view, a genius songwriter, although clearly a very troubled person. I hope, one day, whoever has the tapes of his later material, particularly with Diminished Responsibility, will allow it to be released.

I never find Acid Drops music or any material. Peet was a big hitman, maybe once time it will be released your later work.
Peet´s and David´s sons are musicians, Annies daugters are models. I hope that Lola or Tali will be singer too. But it is my personal dream.

Back in the mid-80's, I had friends who were in the Raleigh-based band Three Hits (the only other band I've ever found who recorded for Hib-Tone besides those guys from Athens, GA) - "Blind Among The Flowers" was their encore cover.

And their 45 was issued 4 years later. No doubt because Don Dixon was Three Hits producer. Ex-Hampton Grease Band guitarist Harold Kelling also issued a 45 on Hib-Tone.
