THE ATLANTICS - BIG CITY ROCK (1979)
The Atlantics were formed in January 1976 by guitarist Tom Hauck and bass player Bruce Wilkinson, two students at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. The Atlantics were signed to ABC Records that summer, and in December the band recorded their album “Big City Rock” at the Hit Factory in New York. The record dropped in March, 1979, but a few weeks before the release ABC Records was sold to MCA Records. Their new label, together with Premier Talent, put the Atlantics on a nationwide tour with Roxy Music, followed by a regional tour throughout New England. The band performed with artists including The Ramones, Cheap Trick, Boston, The Cars, Graham Parker, and many others. The single “One Last Night” by Bruce Wilkinson received regional and international airplay, and the album garnered a glowing review in Rolling Stone. During the next two years the Atlantics released several more songs on tape to Boston radio stations, including “Pop Shivers,” “Wrong Number” and “Weekend.” In June 1983 the band played their final show at the Channel in Boston. The original analog tapes of many of the Atlantics most popular songs were then put into storage. In 2006 these tapes were recovered and thirteen tracks were digitally restored for the ATLANTICS album. In 2006, Rayboy Fernandes (atlantics drummer) posted a comment on the Little Hits blog : "We've been in touch with Universal Music who owns the rights to the master recordings so we could remix and remaster the record correctly because we felt we actually played pretty well. But to no avail. The money it would cost to do this would be impossible to attain".

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for doing this! This is an excellent album and very worthy of reissue, though sadly that will likely never happen.
Any chance you could post Berlin Airlift, November Group, early Robert Ellis Orrall, New Models, The Fools ("Sold Out" & "Heavy Mental"), Jon Butcher Axis, Human Sexual Response ("In A Roman Mood"), The Rings ("Rhythm Method") and anything else Boston area from the late-70s and early-80s?
I can't tell you just how huge the Atlantics were to me back in the day. I had to have seen these guys dozens of times around the Boston area - and they were HOT. Scorching when they played - every time!
Thanks so much for putting this on your blog. Great, great job!
Another excellent super post. Thanks!!!
Saw them opening for Roxy in 79 and was hooked. Played the album to death and saw them a few times in New York, but never in Boston, By the time I moved there in '83, they had broken up. A shame, they were a great live band. I wish that Rayboy could have swung the remastering and have followed the progress of his negotiations on his website.
This is great album I've been dying to hear again. My vinyl is worn out and the cassette I made warbles .
Thanks sooooo much!
