THE BLOW POPS - RADIO, LIVE & RARITIES (2004)

Charms Blow Pops are hard candy lollipops filled with bubble gum. They were originally produced by The Charms Company, which was acquired by Tootsie Roll Industries in 1988. Hence the title of the first Blow Pops album "Charmed, I'm Sure". Here are some Blow Pops' rarities given to me a few years ago by some old mate from North Carolina. A mix of radio and live performances plus some bands related to the Blow Pops. Noteworthy is the cover of the Shoes' "Tomorrow Night". (Jeff Murphy produced "American Beauties".)

John Daniels was on the 1st Blow Pops album.

Tim Buckley (guitar & vocals in The Blow Pops), John & Mike DeVogal were 3/4ths of Wobble Test - The best band to ever come out of Milwaukee.

Tim, John & Alan Weatherhead became Maki and moved to Richmond Virginia: http://www.myspace.com/makirock

Charles Jordan now fronts the excellent Knit Delicates: http://www.myspace.com/knitdelicate

FEATURED: SODA
Formed in Milwaukee in the mid 1990's, Soda consisted of four drinking buddies who spit out heart-on-your-sleeve pop songs that somehow make you want to sing along whether it's happy hour, closing time or Sunday morning coming down. Sort of Hank Williams meets Badfinger meets Husker Du. During their 3-year existence, members John Daniels (b), Mike DeVogel (v, g), Charles Jordan (v, g), and Alan Weatherhead (d,v) built-up a war chest of hit songs, while managing to record only a handful of them and not release a single one. Their reputation was built off a 4-song demo tape they handed out to bands they opened for. Those bands in turn spread out to preach the gospel. 'Into The Teens' and 'Purple Heart' are taken off that cassette. As the saying goes, play this record loud (Our preference is closing time).

Why you never heard of them: mostly recorded only when studio time was offered free and what they did record, they never released.

Indicative Lyrics: 'My heart of gold is not worth much.'

Just curious who you got this from. I know I made the cassette originally, but there's a few people in NC that could have ended up with one - Nancy, Melissa, and some of the bands The Blow Pops played with when I stowed away on one of their tours.

Sorry I'm getting a little comment happy, but I'm thrilled to see some of my old friends music up on a blog. Finally listening to this after all these years & I thought I'd give you some more info and some timeline. Root Cellar was Mike, Jack & Nick's band before The Blow Pops. After The Blow Pops recorded their 1st album (and while they were waiting for it to come out), Tim & John continued with Wobble Test while Mike, Jack & Nick joined Ward (post-Troubles) as Simpleton. The Blow Pops album eventually came out & Ward continued on with (Mike Hoffman of EIEIO & Keith Brammer of Die Kreuzen) and Wobble Test morphed into Soda - "Come & See Me" is actually called "Beyond" by Soda. During/After The Blow Pops, Jack also played in The Carolinas (still does). The Squares/Wooldridge Brothers (Led by Scott & Brian Wooldridge) have no connection other than they are also from Milwaukee & write catchy songs. Same with Liquid Pink. Jack also plays in The Mighty Deerlick - The band I played in until I moved to Austin TX...They're still going strong without me.

This is to good to be true. Ward happens to be on my dessert island music collection. I wish his work could be re-recorded and on to CD!
Sadly this was a scene I would have loved. At the time I was attending UW-Oshkosh and only bands that traveled up that way did I know about.
Later years I'm trying to hunt down anything and everything I can find.

Problem is the files don't want to extract. Any help would be welcome.

Holy crap.

I'm late to this here party, but I just wanted to throw some HUGE thanks to whomever it was who posted the tracks by Soda. I saw them play in front of about 20 people in the basement bar at Cicero's in St. Louis back in 1995; that was back when I was seeing maybe 200-300 shows a year. I've seen gajillions of bands play over time, and that Soda show is easily, effortlessly in my top 10 of all time. I still remember them finishing their set with Freda Payne's "Band Of Gold", and it was stunning.

I got a review copy of a demo tape from them that night, but the writer of a local fanzine "borrowed" it from me and never returned it. For 13 years I've scoured the internet for anything related to the band or band members, but searching for "Soda" "band" and "Milwaukee" always turns up a bunch of really bad music.

And now this. Holy crap. I feel like I just found the Holy Grail.

Any chance Bedazzler could re-up the Soda, Maki, and Wobble Test?

Pretty sure I grabbed all the Blow Pops stuff first time I saw this post (vols 2 and 3 are down now), but never checked comments. Looooooved that band. Saw a reunion show several years ago now at the Cactus Club with Troy from Coolhand Band opening.

Hi Angelo - this looks very cool, but all links are down.

Would you be so kind as to put this on your re-up list?

Cheers.
