THE SCOOTERS
YOUNG GIRLS (1980) - BLUE EYES (1981)

The Scooters were one of the many "skinny-tie" Power Pop bands of the golden era. They were pretty popular on the local scene during those early days of the Power Pop movement, playing Madame Wong's on a regular basis as well as The Starwood and The Whiskey, opening for bands such as The Police and Joe Jackson.
They released two catchy hook-filled albums, Young Girls (1980) and Blue Eyes (1981) with powerfully dynamic songs. Their approach to songwriting was solidly pop with la la la's and handclaps. "Young Girls" was recorded in England and produced by Phil Wainman (of Sweet, XTC, Boomtown Rats fame).
After the Scooters broke up, Larry Lee became a record Producer, in fact he produced "Plastic Facts" by the Nu Kats for Rhino Records and after the Nu Kats broke up Bobby Wickland formed a band named "BOY" but then he got the call to join Badfinger. So, the bassist Larry Lee and drummer Bobby Dean Wickland toured as Badfinger with Joey Molland. Both played on the Joey Molland album "Basil" (a collection of Demos Old and New) released in 1998. Just give a listen to "Let Me In" that could have been included on any vintage Badfinger albums. Both albums have never been reissued and seem now lost forever. The Blue Eyes album was given to me by an old PPL member while i was making the artwork with his scans - a team work.

Yay! These guys deserve a bit of recognition! They were a great band to see back in the "day", but got shortchanged pretty badly in the same manner alot of other bands did by becoming nothing more than a tax writeoff thanks to a massive lack of serious promotion. There's a video for the song "Driveaway" floating about out there somewhere...hopefully it'll surface one of these days. On a sad note, lead singer/songwriter Robert Ferrero passed away back in 2003...a talented musician and a really nice guy that will be terribly missed.
I remember it as "Skinny Tie" bands not "Tiny Tie" bands.

comment, I finally just clicked on the title, and figured it out (so dumb!) You don't have to post what I wrote.
THANX! Havent heard this in about twenty five plus years. Hope it comes through!
I knew Robert Ferrero in the early 80s in LA. We used to jam at the Central (later the Viper Club) on Sunset on Tuesday nights... a hot spot for great players, local and touring. Robert and I formed a band called Good Question with Dan Gerous on drums, Robert on guitar, me on keys, and a guitarist whose name I'm spacing out. Robert was an awesome guy, a great songwriter, and a lot of fun to spend time with. I'm sure when my time comes he'll be out there waiting to jam with me some more.
Been looking for Blue Eyes for years. Thank you!
Merci
P.
Great Blog and great album, it was dedicated to John Lennon (sleeve). I buy this album in the early eighties. Thank you.
